Knights Templar

How Did Knights Templar Order Influence “Game of Thrones”?

Historical events have always attracted writers and cinematographers. Recently, the contemporary theme for them has become medieval orders. Most of them, at some point, began to have a bad influence on the political processes in Europe at that time. They led independent wars and entered into agreements. One of the most known in the whole world was the Order of Templar, which was created by nine knights. However, a bit later, this number increased significantly. Nowadays, their famous symbol – Templar Cross that is known in the whole world.

When were the Templar knights formed?

1119 is considered the date of foundation of this Order. Nine French knights created it. For nine years, no one heard of the existence of the Order. In 1127, they returned to France to declare the viability of their Order. And already in 1128, this medieval Order was officially recognized by the Church Council.

What was the Knights Templar oath?

Members of the Order had no right to lead a secular life, sing or even change their appearance. The discipline was rigorous. The knights were supposed to give the oath that contains three promises. These are the vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. Gradually the Order turned into a military unit, which obeyed only the Grand Masters.

In the serial “Game of Thrones,” a promise of celibacy is given by the soldiers of the Night Guard. Such a feature, of course, resembles orders of knights that acted in the Holy Land. The church is not present in the series as a dangerous political force, but the oath of celibacy was a crucial moment in the series.

Observance of strict discipline and unquestioning obedience helped Templars to achieve organization. As a result, they seized enormous wealth. Templars have become owners of ships and ports, and many lands. Also, they had a powerful fleet. It turned out that they could borrow vast sums of money to the monarchs who lost their position, and as a result, they had an opportunity to influence state affairs.

Such a feature as strict discipline was present in the “Game of Thrones.” All soldiers were well-organized. Maybe, for this reason, they were obligated to give the oath of celibacy. It makes them think only about duties but not about wife and children.

So some influence of the Order of Templar on the serial “Game of Thrones” is present but not significant. The lifestyle of the knights was more strict than the soldiers of the Night Guard. It is worth saying that very often, the Knights of Templar were young landless knights, deprived of inheritance and other young men, for whom the sword was the only instrument of labor. To some extent, the same situation was in Night Guard. There were a lot of excluded people.
